Overview of Butterfly Valve and its Operating Systems

Butterfly Valve is a quarter turn family valve, that requires only 90° rotation to come in action. The butterfly valve use a central disc inside the valve body as a barrier to stop the fluid flow. The rotational disc is connected to stem and that stem connected to either manual gear, hand lever or pneumatic actuator.

Manual valve operation

Using a wheel, crank, or lever, these rudimentary actuators move the stem and disc by hand. For remote pipe systems without access to electricity, they are simple, inexpensive valve operating systems. Large valves may contain a geared system to increase torque. Analog indicators correspond to the disc’s approximate position on advanced gear-operated actuators.

The use of this type of valve operation is limited to small-sized valves. Because of their low speed, they are not suitable for critical pipe systems.

Pneumatic valve actuators

In many industries, such as oil and gas, chemical, water and wastewater, bulk storage, pulp & paper, and power generation, pneumatic valve actuators are used in extreme conditions. Various valve control processes use these devices for regulating (or stopping) flow or controlling pressure and level. Pneumatic actuators are one of the most popular types of actuators in the industry due to their simplicity and reliability.

They work by converting air pressure into motion. The actuator shaft, which is mechanically connected to the valve or damper stem, is placed under air pressure to operate a diaphragm, rotary vane, or piston. Pneumatic actuators can produce linear or rotary motion, depending on their type.

Motorized Butterfly Valve Flanged with Electric Actuator

Motorized butterfly valves flanged with an electric actuator typically consist of a quarter-turn electric actuator (0*90° turn) and a double-flanged butterfly valve after installation and commissioning. A butterfly valve with an electric flange is a simple structure, small in size and light in weight, and has only a few parts. It can be opened and closed quickly by rotating 90°. The valve also has good fluid control properties.

The disc of the electric flanged butterfly valve is mounted in the diameter direction of the pipe. The disc-shaped butterfly plate rotates around an axis at an angle of 0° to 90° in the cylindrical passage of the butterfly valve body. 90° is the fully open position.

When the flanged butterfly valve is fully opened, the thickness of the butterfly plate is the only resistance to the flow of medium through the valve body. As a result, the pressure drop generated by the valve is minimal. As a result, the valve provides better flow control. There are two types of seals on the triple offset butterfly valve: an elastic seal and a metal seal. Sealing rings for elastic sealing valves can either be mounted on the valve body or attached to the butterfly plate.

Butterfly Valves In Various Industries

Butterfly valves control or isolate the flow of a fluid. Quarter-turn valves are part of a family of valves known as “quarter-turn valves”. They are closed by rotating a disk.

A rod connects the disc to an actuator outside the valve. When the valve plate pivots at the center and is moved by an actuator, it looks like a butterfly’s wings. This is why they are called butterfly valves.

Butterfly valves have a gearbox and a handwheel connected to the stem, making them easy to operate and quick to open. Butterfly valves are both lightweight and easy to use and are able to handle high-pressure recovery and low-pressure drops admirably.

Oil and gas applications require butterfly valve suppliers to deliver a high degree of durability and reliability to ensure minimal maintenance and long life. They require materials that can handle aggressive medium and withstand the extreme conditions of explosive environments and saline offshore conditions. Therefore, butterfly valves for oil and gas applications need to be rugged, heavy-duty, and functional.
